Inhale, exhale. Running, yoga – they both make me feel content, calm, physically and mentally strong.
I’ve always loved running – still do. From cross country running at age 10 (in my hockey studs as I didn’t have proper running shoes), to my first marathon in 1997 (London). A rash bet with a hockey club friend over too many glasses of wine, and a love of distance running was born.
Running became my ‘moving meditation’, but the further I ran the more I realised that my body wouldn’t always love running as much as my mind did.
I started to practice Ashtanga yoga in 2005 in Dublin. I was hooked. Here was something I couldn’t ever imagine tiring of, and the only frustration has been getting this runner’s body to do Hanumanasana (the splits, for heaven’s sake...) and the like, and to find good yoga instructors in a provincial English town.
And then – the stars aligned and we moved to South East Asia. It’s like a massive cookie jar of all the styles of yoga you can only imagine, with the most incredible instructors, yoga courses, amazing locations to practice yoga, and wonderful fellow yogis to share the journey with.
It was time to teach – and bring my two loves together.
